Joseph Gottlieb Kölreuter, Professor of Natural History and Director of the Palace Gardens in Karlsruhe, is regarded as the founder of flower ecology and the discoverer of insect pollination and described the genetic basis of heredity before Mendel.

Karlsruhe Congress

The Karlsruhe Congress - the first international meeting of modern chemistry and the "birth" of the periodic table of elements, on September 3-5, 1860, on the initiative of Kekulé, Wurtz and Weltzien. The congress is regarded as the most important event in the history of chemistry in the 19th century.
